As a Staff Engineer, you’ll play a pivotal role in shaping technical direction while remaining hands-on with development. You’ll combine deep engineering expertise with leadership that elevates the people and systems around you.
You’ll be working on our Business Services platform where we’re building the foundations of a modern bank - delivering APIs, orchestrating workflows, and enabling event‑driven solutions that power seamless customer experiences across the organisation.
Role Location: Auckland or Wellington.

In this role, you will have the opportunity to:
Lead the design and build of new features on our Business Services Platform
Play a critical role in discovery and driving innovation
Help build engineering principles and standards based on industry best practice
Collaborate with architects, product owners, external vendors and other stakeholders to get the best outcome
Drive and promote platform uplift, stability and resilience
Maintain delivery pipelines and support continuous delivery
Contribute to the engineering and platform digital strategy and roadmap
Contribute to communities of practices and provide guidance across the wider technology landscape
Work in a supportive and agile environment
Cultivate a culture of growth and continuous improvement of your craft
Mentor and coach other engineers
Ōu Pūkenga? - What will you bring?
To grow and be successful in this role you will bring most of the following:
Strong development experience building enterprise microservices using NodeJS (5+ years) and Java Spring Boot (8+ years)
Experience designing APIs using common data models like BIAN to support interoperability and consistency
Experience using Kubernetes Platforms like OpenShift and AWS EKS (5+ years)
Good understanding of software development principles and microservices architectures
Strong technical leadership experience and proven track record in influencing technical direction
Able to convey complex technical concepts to technical and non-technical stakeholders effectively
Demonstrates strong critical thinking and decision-making skills, even under demanding deadlines
Strong technical knowledge for designing scalable, reliable, and maintainable applications utilizing CI/CD pipelines
Strong Scrum/Agile skills
Experience working with remote vendor teams
