Overview
We are looking for a Senior Mechanical Engineer to join the APC team! This is a full time role, based at our project site Tarbert. The core working hours are 8:00am-5:00pm (including a 1-hour break), Monday to Friday.
Position Summary
The Senior Mechanical Engineer is responsible for leading mechanical engineering activities for EPC power-generation and industrial projects, including mechanical design review, specification development, equipment selection, piping design oversight, and site/commissioning support. You will be reporting to the Director of Engineering.
Responsibilities
General Characteristics:
Applies broad, in-depth mechanical engineering principles across rotating equipment, piping, pressure systems, HVAC, plant utilities, and balance-of-plant systems.
Independently evaluates complex technical issues and develops robust engineering solutions.
Understands related disciplines (civil, electrical, C\&I) sufficiently to manage interfaces and resolve multi-discipline clashes.
Interprets and applies mechanical codes and standards, including Eurocodes, EN 13480/13445, PED/CE Marking, ASME B31.1/B31.3, and Irish/European regulations.
Maintains up-to-date knowledge of industry practices and mechanical technologies relevant to power-generation EPC projects.
Represents the mechanical discipline in client, vendor, contractor, and regulatory authority engagements.
Technical Responsibilities
Lead the development, review, and approval of all mechanical engineering deliverables, including specifications, datasheets, calculations, P\&IDs, 3D model content, and engineering reports.
Oversee mechanical design undertaken by the Engineer of Record (EOR), ensuring alignment with project requirements, Irish/UK regulations, and company standards.
Perform or review calculations for:
o equipment sizing
o heat balances
o pipe sizing \& hydraulic analysis
o auxiliary load estimates
o mechanical integrity and stress checks
Ensure designs comply with:
o EPC contract requirements
o relevant Irish legislation (Safety, Health \& Welfare at Work Regulations; Pressure Systems Safety; Building Regulations as applicable)
o European standards (PED, ATEX, Machinery Directive)
o Eurocodes and EN/ISO mechanical standards
o utility/grid operator requirements
Develop and review mechanical specifications for procurement packages, including equipment for gas/steam turbine systems, pumps, fans, compressors, heat exchangers, boilers/HRSG interfaces, tanks, and auxiliary mechanical systems.
Review mechanical vendor documents, performance curves, general arrangement drawings, stress analyses, welding documentation, NDE requirements, and fabrication/installation procedures.
Lead mechanical engineering risk assessments, including design hazard reviews, HAZOP/HAZID participation, constructability reviews, and operability assessments.
Ensure constructability, maintainability, operability, and lifecycle considerations are incorporated into all designs.
Contribute mechanical content to plant-wide 3D models and coordinate with piping, structural, electrical, and C\&I teams to resolve interferences and optimise layouts.
Support the development and maintenance of internal mechanical design standards, templates, procedures, and lessons learned.
Maintain accurate digital records of engineering work in accordance with document control procedures and ISO 9001 quality requirements.
Program, Project, and Task Management
Plan, coordinate, and manage mechanical engineering scopes, budgets, schedules, and deliverables.
Develop mechanical inputs for engineering execution plans (EEPs), project schedules, and multi-discipline resource plans.
Support proposal and tendering activities, including equipment lists, mechanical quantities, layout concepts, and performance modelling.
Review mechanical risks, opportunities, and mitigation actions as part of project risk management processes.
Prepare technical content for procurement packages, including mechanical datasheets, scope of supply documents, inspection and testing requirements, and performance guarantees.
Coordinate mechanical interfaces across disciplines (civil, structural, electrical, C\&I, process, and construction).
Monitor EOR progress, ensuring timely delivery of mechanical drawings, specifications, and calculations according to project milestones.
Management, Supervision \& Mentorship
Provide technical guidance, coaching, and direction to junior and intermediate mechanical engineers.
Support the development of competency and training plans for mechanical engineering staff, aligned with Engineers Ireland professional formation requirements.
Review and check the work of team members, ensuring compliance with standards, quality procedures, and engineering best practice.
Represent the discipline in coordination meetings and support the Project Engineering Manager with reporting and issue resolution.
Lead portions of design reviews, technical workshops, and engineering coordination meetings.
Construction Support \& Field Engineering
Provide mechanical engineering support to site teams during construction, installation, testing, and commissioning.
Attend site visits to inspect installation quality, mechanical alignment, pipework routing, supports, and equipment placement.
Review and approve method statements, lifting plans, pressure test packages, mechanical completion dossiers, and commissioning procedures.
Resolve mechanical design-related issues that arise during installation and commissioning to protect schedule and cost outcomes.
Support pre-commissioning, energisation, mechanical run-in, performance testing, and final acceptance activities.
Participate in HAZOP closeout, punch listing, NCR resolution, and redline/as-built processes.
Procurement \& Subcontractor Interface
Support procurement in evaluating mechanical equipment vendors and subcontractors.
Review technical bid evaluations and vendor clarifications.
Participate in factory acceptance tests (FATs), design reviews, and vendor meetings.
Lead technical negotiations with suppliers where required.
Support the generation of conforming specifications and mechanical sections of purchase orders and subcontracts.
Monitor vendor documentation, ensuring compliance with project requirements and timely delivery.
Health, Safety, Environmental \& Quality (HSEQ)
Apply and uphold ISO 45001, ISO 9001, and ISO 14001 practices within mechanical engineering work.
Integrate safety, environmental, and sustainability considerations into design decisions.
Ensure mechanical designs comply with relevant Irish regulations (e.g., Pressure Systems Safety Regulations, ATEX, Machinery Directive, SHWW Construction Regulations).
Report non-conformances and support root cause analysis and corrective actions.
Participate in safety audits, design risk assessments, HAZID/HAZOP reviews, and constructability evaluations.
Communication, Teamwork \& Leadership
Communicate effectively with clients, EPC partners, authorities, and internal teams.
Represent the mechanical discipline in project meetings, workshops, design reviews, and site coordination sessions.
Provide clear, professional written communication including technical reports, design reviews, scope clarifications, and responses to client/owner's engineer comments.
Demonstrate leadership in promoting teamwork, inclusion, and professional standards consistent with Engineers Ireland's Code of Ethics.
Business Development \& Company Image
Support business development efforts by contributing mechanical inputs for proposals, tenders, and feasibility studies.
Maintain strong relationships with clients, OEMs, vendors, and design partners.
Support market intelligence activities, identifying new technologies, design methods, and opportunities within the power and industrial sectors.
Represent the company professionally at industry events, meetings, and client interactions.
IT \& Digital Engineering
Use and maintain engineering software such as AutoCAD, Plant 3D, SmartPlant, piping design tools, stress analysis software (e.g., CAESAR II), and calculation suites.
Follow digital engineering procedures for document management, cybersecurity, and data privacy.
Contribute to the continuous improvement of digital workflows, automation, and modelling practices.
Desired Skills, Qualifications \& Experience
Degree in Mechanical Engineering (Master's preferred).
8-15 years' experience in mechanical engineering for power generation or large industrial EPC projects.
Chartered Engineer (CEng MIEI) or working toward chartership with Engineers Ireland.
Strong expertise in rotating equipment, piping design, pressure systems, heat transfer, fluid mechanics, and mechanical integrity.
Knowledge of PED, ATEX, Machinery Directive, EN/ISO mechanical standards, and ASME/EN piping codes.
Strong communication, stakeholder management, and leadership skills.
Proven problem-solving capability and ability to work independently with professional judgement.
Experience leading EOR oversight and multi-discipline coordination.
