Job Description

Job Overview

We are seeking a skilled and experienced WordPress WooCommerce Web Developer to join our team as a contractor on an ongoing basis. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in building, maintaining, and optimizing e-commerce websites using WordPress and WooCommerce as well as APF by Studio Wombat.

Compensation and Benefits

Competitive hourly rate or salary based on experience. *Note, we’ve worked with Web Devs for over a decade and come to know how long projects should take.

Flexible working hours, 15-30 hours per week.

Key Responsibilities

WordPress and WooCommerce Development: Build, customize, and maintain WooCommerce-based e-commerce sites on WordPress, including integrating payment gateways, shipping options, inventory management, and custom features to enhance user experience and sales performance.

CSS Customization: Write and implement custom CSS to modify themes, layouts, and elements for responsive design, ensuring cross-browser compatibility and adherence to modern web standards.

Cloudflare Integration and Management: Set up and configure domains using Cloudflare, including DNS management, SSL/TLS certificates, caching rules, and performance optimizations like image optimization, minification, and edge caching to improve site speed and reliability.

Troubleshooting and Fixes: Diagnose and resolve issues with code, plugins, and themes when they break, including debugging PHP, JavaScript, and database-related problems. Perform root cause analysis to prevent recurring issues.

Security Implementation: Conduct regular security audits, implement best practices such as firewalls (e.g., via Cloudflare WAF), secure coding standards, malware scanning, and user access controls. Monitor for vulnerabilities and apply patches promptly to protect against hacks, data breaches, and other threats.

Update Management: Safely manage backend updates for WordPress core, plugins, themes, and WooCommerce extensions. Test updates in staging environments to ensure they do not break site functionality, custom code, or integrations before deploying to production.

Performance Optimization: Analyze and improve site speed, SEO, and overall performance using tools like Cloudflare, caching plugins, and code optimizations.

Collaboration and Documentation: Work closely with stakeholders (e.g., designers, marketers) to implement new features. Maintain clear documentation of code changes, configurations, and security protocols for future reference.

Ongoing Maintenance: Provide routine site monitoring, backups, and emergency support to minimize downtime and ensure high availability.

Required Skills and Qualifications

Technical Expertise:

Proven experience (3+ years) with WordPress and WooCommerce development, including custom theme and plugin development.

Strong proficiency in CSS, HTML5, JavaScript/jQuery, and PHP for frontend and backend customizations.

Familiarity with debugging tools (e.g., browser dev tools, WP Debug, Query Monitor) and version control systems like Git.

Knowledge of databases (MySQL/MariaDB) and server environments (e.g., Apache/Nginx, shared/VPS hosting).

Security Focus:

Experience in web security, including implementing HTTPS, two-factor authentication, secure file permissions, and compliance with standards like GDPR or PCI-DSS for e-commerce.

Ability to conduct vulnerability assessments.

Problem-Solving and Maintenance:

Track record of fixing broken plugins, themes, and code conflicts without causing further issues.

Experience with staging sites, rollback procedures, and automated backups to handle updates safely.

Soft Skills:

Excellent problem-solving abilities with a methodical approach to troubleshooting.

Strong attention to detail and a proactive mindset for preventing issues before they arise.

Good communication skills to explain technical concepts to non-technical team members.
