Located on the lands of the Bidiagal Clan of the Dharawal Nation (Randwick, NSW), Black Dog Institute is the only Medical Research Institute in Australia to investigate mental health across the full lifespan, our aim is to create a mentally healthier world for everyone. The Role
The purpose of the Product Manager (my Compass) role is to develop, deliver and manage the myCompass product and associated solutions inline with grant guidelines and BDI’s research, to ensure it effectively translates and scales for the general market. The role sites within the Research Translation and Commercial Services directorate within the newly formed Product stream.
Duties \& Responsibilities
Product Strategy
Conduct analysis of current product performance, identifying areas for improvement and optimisation.
Understand user pain points and jobs-to-be-done to inform a clear product roadmap.
Carry out targeted user research where necessary to address blind spots.
Develop a product strategy (in collaboration with the Lead Researcher) that maximises impact.
Customer \& Market Insight
Champion the user perspective in all product discussions and decisions.
Partner with research to map user jobs-to-be-done by segment and ensure the roadmap aligns with these needs.
Ensure any product or feature is considers those with lived and living experience, First Nations peoples and accessibility Data-Driven Optimisation
Define and monitor key product metrics to evaluate engagement, impact, and overall performance.
Optimise the product funnel using data-led insights to guide prioritisation and decision-making.
Ensure reporting aligns with product management best practice.
Use analytics to validate assumptions and drive continuous improvement.
Share insights across the organisation to inform broader strategy and operations.
Governance, Reporting \& Compliance
Contribute to strategic, operational, and business planning processes.
Deliver regular reports on product performance, roadmap progress, and emerging risks.
Ensure compliance with policies, including data governance, ethics, and mental health safety standards.
Contribute to annual reporting activities to the funder.
Skills \& Experience Required
The successful candidate will be a strategic and user-focused Product Manager with a proven ability to deliver impact in complex environments. They will combine strong analytical skills with creativity, stakeholder management, and the ability to translate evidence into scalable, real-world solutions.
Essential
Demonstrated experience managing a digital product end-to-end, including roadmap planning, delivery, optimisation, and lifecycle management.
Strong analytical skills with the ability to define, track, and interpret product metrics to drive data-informed decisions.
Proven ability to translate user research and jobs-to-be-done insights into actionable product strategies and features.
Experience collaborating with cross-functional teams (engineering, design, research, vendors) to deliver products on time and within budget.
Excellent communication skills with the ability to represent the user voice and influence stakeholders at all levels.
Understanding of governance, compliance, and ethical considerations, particularly in relation to data and/or health products.
Strong organisational and prioritisation skills, with the ability to balance strategy, delivery, and operational demands.
Experience working with external vendors or partners to deliver product outcomes.
Desirable
Experience working in a research-driven or evidence-based environment (e.g., health, education, government).
Familiarity with mental health or wellbeing-related products, services, or safety standards.
Knowledge of agile and lean product development practices
