We sat down with the Engineering Lead (Who you’ll report to) and they let us know the following about the role:

This is a 10-month fixed term, full time position based in Wellington. This is a hybrid role with three days in the office, anchor days being Monday, Wednesday and Thursday and two days where you can work flexibly.

What are the day to day tasks the person in this role will complete?* Lead QA efforts: Design and build robust automation, manual testing and identifying issues while working on complex or high impact solutions within the bank.

Shape technical direction: Thinking critically and laterally about test design, mitigate project risks through appropriate test approach, and exploring applications to expose vulnerabilities.

Mentor and support: Coach junior and intermediate developers by providing guidance through code reviews, pair programming and feedback

Drive operational excellence: Champion practices that improve reliability, performance, and deployment efficiency.

Maintain Technical Documentation: Ensure system-level and architectural documentation is accurate, up to date and accessible to relevant stakeholders.

Foster innovation: Identify opportunities for technical or process improvement and help lead the implementation.

What projects / work will the candidate be working on now and into the next year?

Modernising the Bank's core ledger technology by transitioning from the end-of-life product to Cloud based Ledger. As part of this strategic transformation, new Integration APIs are being built to support customer experience improvement and product simplification which will help BNZ improve its agility and flexibility to increase ability and velocity of change.

What is the most exciting thing about this opportunity?

As a Senior Automation Tester, you’ll lead in the design and delivery of Test Suite and also comfortable with manual testing, influence technical direction, and support other QA Engineers and team to grow and succeed. You’ll also play a key role in ensuring systems remain stable, secure, and reliable through hands-on support and incident management.

What technical skills are required for this role?* Strong experience with Java/J2EE, Spring-boot, OpenAPI and EDA and CI/CD

Proven experience of TDD and BDD

Proven experience with leading test strategy

Proven experience of writing Automation integration test

Knowledge of AWS would be beneficial

Familiarity with Unix, IntelliJ IDE
