We are seeking a motivated Graduate Web Developer to join our Scunthorpe-based IT applications team (hybrid working available post probation). This role is ideal for recent graduates with a degree in Computer Science, Web Development, Software Engineering, or a related field, who are passionate about building responsive websites and web applications within a manufacturing environment. The position involves supporting the design, development, and maintenance of digital products, writing clean code with HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and other modern web technologies, and collaborating with other developers to ensure optimal performance, usability, and accessibility.

The ideal candidate should have a solid understanding of front-end technologies such as HTML5, CSS3, and JavaScript. Basic knowledge of back-end development, experience with version control systems (e.g., GitHub), and an understanding of databases and web optimisation are desirable. Strong problem-solving skills, effective communication at all levels, and an enthusiasm for learning are essential. Candidates will spend time understanding our business and its product lines, key business processes across multiple departments, as well as customer requirements across the UK and abroad.

What to expect from the scheme

Induction – you will receive a full induction to British Steel which will include a corporate induction, site tour, networking session, health and safety induction and team working day.

12 months Personal Development Scheme – during which you will rotate to a new work area across the department, understanding all elements of the function.

Projects – all graduates are assigned projects to complete during their rotation. The topic of these will depend upon business needs in your chosen discipline.

Day-to-day tasks – in addition to, or sometimes instead of projects, graduates will carry out day-to-day tasks within their work area.

Training and development – we are committed to ensuring you are fully trained to do the work we are asking you to do. In additional the Learning \& Development team will provide you with skills to succeed and progress within the business.

Chartership – where suitable/required we will support graduates to become chartered or professionally qualified in their discipline.

Opportunities –we will provide you with a range of opportunities to take advantage of. Some of our graduates become STEM ambassadors, attend university conferences / meetings, and help out with recruitment of new trainees.

Coaching and mentoring – all graduates are assigned a mentor. They will be with you throughout your scheme and will support and advise you.

Variety – we are a large company with a large number of employees. In Scunthorpe there is a huge integrated steel plant as well as all of the business functions, with two other major facilities in the North East. You will be exposed to everything from iron making to procurement to public relations (PR) to rail rolling.

Support and care – the Early Careers Development Team, based within HR, are dedicated to helping and supporting trainees during their scheme. We understand that it can be daunting beginning work for the first time and starting out in your career so we will be with you every step of the way. We even provide advice and guidance before you start and will signpost you, for example, if you need help with accommodation.

How will you progress?

Upon completion of the scheme you will have a broad knowledge base across the IT and have built specialist skills in IT web design, with potential for more senior roles.

We’re looking for someone with excellent analytical, organisational and communication skills. Combining your business knowledge, you'll know how to collaborate effectively with a range of internal and external stakeholders.

You will be qualified to degree level, in a relevant topic. Predominantly learning on the job under the supervision of our specialist teams, and you will have the opportunity to apply your academic knowledge in a practical environment. We operate in an exciting fast paced industry where we support each other, therefore the ability to manage priorities to tight but achievable timescales is required, alongside the ability to work well as part of a team.
