Job Description:
This internship, offered by ELCA in collaboration with Carrosserie HESS AG, focuses on developing advanced methods for detecting operationally relevant events from live and historical IoT telemetry collected from a fleet of electric trolleybuses. The student will apply data analytics and machine learning to define, implement, and validate approaches for extracting actionable events such as charging cycles, fault occurrences, or progress along a route (e.g., arriving at stops)—from large-scale time series datasets. The project supports sustainability goals by optimizing the operation and maintenance of zero-emission vehicles, and lays the groundwork for innovative digital products and enhanced customer support.
The task will be refined together with the customer at the start of the project. Regular on-site meetings (biweekly or monthly) will occur alternatively at HESS in Bellach or ELCA offices (Zürich or Bern), ensuring close collaboration and practical insights.
It can be both types: either for Master / Diploma thesis or internship.
Objective:
Design and prototype algorithms for event detection in electric trolleybus telemetry data (e.g., identifying charging events, fault patterns, or operational anomalies).
Analyze live streaming and historical sensor data to define event types and detection criteria relevant to bus fleet operations.
Apply AI, machine learning, and statistical methods to detect, classify and interpret detected events.
Visualize results, evaluate your solutions, and present your work to experts at HESS and ELCA.
Collaborate with HESS engineers and product owners to validate event definitions and detection results.
