This position is for a technically well-rounded individual with experience building and shipping mobile, web, or backend applications. This is a technical management role, with responsibility for people and process management of our software engineering team. The engineering manager will also contribute to high-level technical direction for the team.
Our Engineering Managers work closely with the product team to define a roadmap for the team, collaborate with other teams and departments to execute projects, and take responsibility for developer experience and the health of the codebase by identifying and advocating for necessary improvements. This person has a technical background in software engineering and a track record of building and leading a team of engineers.
Our tech stack includes our market-leading Electronic Flight Bag mobile apps (native iOS and Android), our Java/Kotlin (Quarkus) backend services and webapps to support these applications.
This role is based in Prospect, SA (near Adelaide, Australia), reporting directly to the OzRunways CTO. It is a hybrid position requiring in-office presence three days per week.
Key Responsibilities
Provide formal management and career development for engineers, including conducting regular 1:1s, performance reviews, and ongoing coaching
Create and reinforce healthy team norms, values, and processes that foster trust, collaboration, and accountability
Maintain strong communication and emotional intelligence when working with diverse personalities and distributed team members
Partner with product management to prioritise, plan, and deliver roadmap initiatives on time and with high quality
Drive end-to-end project execution, ensuring alignment with business goals while balancing technical trade-offs
Apply knowledge of modern software engineering practices (CI/CD, testing strategies, code reviews, observability, Infrastructure as Code, etc.) to improve delivery effectiveness
Bring strong technical expertise to contribute meaningfully to design discussions, architectural reviews, and technical strategy
Maintain credibility with engineers by understanding technical challenges and guiding direction, while empowering senior engineers to make detailed decisions
Balance technical depth with humility—knowing when to step back and defer to subject matter experts
Remain technically hands-on enough to support the team where needed (e.g. reviews, pairing, small contributions), but focus primarily on leadership, coaching, and delivery
Basic Qualifications
8+ years of professional software engineering experience
2+ years of experience managing or leading a software engineering team
Proven track record of delivering software projects in collaboration with product management and cross-functional teams
Strong technical background in server-side software engineering
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with demonstrated emotional intelligence and people management skills
Preferred Qualifications
Hands-on coding experience in Java, Kotlin, relational databases (we use Postgres and SQLite) or related backend technologies
Experience managing engineers across multiple platforms (backend, mobile, web)
Prior experience helping to establish engineering processes, team culture, and values in a growing team
Aviation experience or being an aviation enthusiast is a plus

Pay is based upon candidate experience and qualifications, as well as market and business considerations. Summary Pay Range: 140,000-180,000 AUD
This position is currently part of Boeing, but it is planned to transition to become an independent company owned by Thoma Bravo, as part of a pending divestiture of the Digital Aviation Solutions organization. If you are selected for this role, your employment may initially be with Boeing (dependent on start date). Subject to final regulatory approvals and closing conditions, your employment may transfer to the divested business owned by Thoma Bravo at close.
