We specialise in infrastructure construction with a strong focus on reinforced concrete. Our current projects span a wide range, including bridges, wharves, water treatment plants, storage tanks, and pipelines.
We are looking for an experienced, practical and selfâsufficient Geotechnical Engineer to join our Civil Technical Team. Youâll provide technical advice, temporary works and alternative design solutions across a wide range of Fulton Hogan projects â from local council jobs through to major NZTA and water infrastructure projects.
Weâre a small, growing specialist team that supports civil, major projects and regional businesses across the country, so you can expect variety, travel, and plenty of complex ground engineering challenges.
This role can be based anywhere in NZ, with a preference for Auckland or Christchurch. Some travel will be required to support projects and site teams around the country.
In addition to the above you will:* Provide geotechnical design and advice for temporary and permanent works across Fulton Hogan projects
Design and review complex working platforms (including edge/slope stability) for piling and other heavy plant
Develop temporary works for deep excavations (e.g. sheet piling, secant piling, soil nailing etc), particularly on upcoming water and wastewater projects
Manage ground-related construction risks (e.g. dewatering and settlement) and advise on mitigation
Review tenders and propose alternative designs that deliver faster, lower-cost and lower-risk outcomes of ground improvements, retaining structures and foundation solutions.
Undertake advanced analysis as required (e.g. 3D modelling skills preferred, slope stability, piling/retaining systems, groundwater models, etc.)
Contribute to specification and design reviews with a contractor-aware, buildable and risk-focused perspective
Spend time on site with delivery teams to understand conditions and construction constraints
Work across multiple projects, switching quickly between different ground conditions and project types

At Fulton Hogan, we genuinely care about the wellbeing of our people and giving them the tools and opportunities they need to succeed and grow with us.
Weâre looking for someone with:* Around 8+ yearsâ experience as a Geotechnical Engineer
A practical mindset, with a strong grasp of construction sequencing, staging and site constraints
Willingness to spend time on site to understand conditions, build relationships and refine designs
Ideally, you will also have:* CPEng (or equivalent) in Geotechnical Engineering, or be close to achieving it
Experience in temporary works design and/or Tier 1 contractor experience
Proficiency with GeoStudio or similar geotechnical analysis software
Experience in complex ground conditions (soft ground, variable geology, groundwater)
A track record of developing alternative designs that improve time, cost and risk outcomes
Weâre keen to hear from you if you:* Enjoy working with site teams to find practical, buildable solutions, not just theoretical answers.
Are open to mentoring and upskilling other engineers in the Civil Technical Team, particularly in geotechnical and ground engineering.
Are keen to broaden your skills into other forms of temporary works design to meet project demand â happy to âlend a handâ beyond pure geotech when needed.
Communicate clearly with both technical and nonâtechnical stakeholders.
