Position Description Summary

Henry Ford College presents an opportunity for a Web Software Developer.

The Web Software Developer creates, maintains, and implements software packages for HFC websites. This position creates and builds custom configuration and code for HFC’s Drupal websites using HTML, CSS, PHP, MySQL, JavaScript, git, and related technologies. Assists team members in handling day-to-day website maintenance tasks. Performs troubleshooting and debugging activity. Implements software code. Relies on limited specifications and professional discretion to plan and accomplish goals. Works under general supervision of the Web Architect, in collaboration with other team members, where some ingenuity and flexibility is required.

The Web Developer analyzes business needs to design, implement, and iterate on the College’s websites, web applications, and web-based content management systems. Working with the Web Architect, the Developer will analyze, develop, enhance, code, test, document, and implement system modifications, as well as document the scope and functional flow of websites and applications. When an internal custom solution is not feasible, the Developer will research third-party products and systems and plans for integration of the new technologies into the existing web and College IT infrastructure.

This position may also provide user support for Microsoft SharePoint and other web-based platforms. Hours: The generally scheduled workday is from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, Monday through Friday; however, as an exempt employee, evening and weekend projects may arise from time to time.

Knowledge of Drupal or other web CMS systems.

Proficiency in HTML, CSS, PHP, JavaScript, and related technologies.

Proficiency with MySQL / MariaDB and similar database management systems.

Strong debugging, troubleshooting, and analysis skills.

Familiarity with accessibility standards (WCAG), tools, equipment, and technologies.

Team orientation that welcomes and thrives in a collaborative environment, and can also succeed working independently.

Candidate must provide examples of prior individual work demonstrating a clear understanding of Object-Oriented PHP development.

Candidate must provide examples of their ability to learn quickly and grasp an understanding of new technologies to complete assignments.

Position-Specific Core Competencies: Software Development* - Knowledge of the principles, methods, and tools for designing, developing, and testing web-related software for deployment to the HFC website and related/supporting services.

Configuration Management (WEB) - Demonstrates knowledge and application of the principles and methods for planning or managing the implementation, updates, or integration of specific features within web-based information systems components. This includes optimizing available features to enhance functionality, improve user experience, and ensure efficient performance.

Logical Systems Design (WEB) - Demonstrates expertise in the principles and methodologies for architecting web-based business logic components, system processes and outputs, user interfaces, data inputs, and productivity tools. This includes proficiency in designing scalable and efficient web architectures, implementing user-friendly web interfaces, and integrating advanced data handling and input mechanisms. Uses tools and techniques such as modern web frameworks, API design, and cloud-based services.

The most successful candidate will have a career that might include the following:* Familiarity with RESTful design principles.

Experience with site building using JavaScript frameworks.

Comfort with UNIX-like operating systems and the command line.

Experience with Git or similar source code management tools.

Familiarity with the principles and practices of team-based project management.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities including but not limited to

Work with the Web Architect to design, develop, and implement secure, reliable, and efficient enterprise web applications, primarily within the Drupal content management framework.

Work with other team members and teammates across the College to develop new website features.

Assist users and editors with maintenance of content in Drupal, SharePoint, and other platforms as needed.

Assist the Web Architect in web server administration and deployment tasks.

Meet with internal stakeholders to define project requirements and develop specifications.

Serve as technical consultant and support to other internal organizations in web-related matters.

Review current sites to identify areas of technical and usability improvement.

Integrate third-party technologies into the college’s existing web infrastructure.

Keep current on web standards and trends.

Perform other duties as assigned within the scope of qualifications and/or training.
