About The Role

Industrial labor is incredibly dangerous work—almost 3 million people in the US per year are injured in the workplace for entirely preventable and at times, fatal or debilitating causes. Protecting these essential people who power our world is what motivates the team at Voxel.

Voxel is a fast-growing AI company revolutionizing workplace safety and operations with a full-stack AI and computer vision platform. Voxel’s site intelligence platform helps safety and operations leaders see unseen risks, make strategic decisions, and prevent workplace incidents before they happen. Our customers include Fortune 500 companies across major grocers and retailers, manufacturers, food and beverage warehousers, and supply chain and logistics providers. Based in San Francisco and backed by leading VCs, Voxel is building the next generation of intelligent video analytics for workplace safety.

We’re looking for a driven and curious Junior Backend Software Engineer to join our Platform team in San Francisco. In this role, you’ll work on the backend and distributed systems that power our real-time perception stack—from ingesting industrial video at scale, to supporting machine learning pipelines, to building production-grade APIs. You’ll collaborate closely with engineering, data science, and product teams to ship high-impact features that directly improve the safety of millions of workers.

You’ll join a visionary team of AI experts, experienced entrepreneurs, and passionate problem-solvers, with the opportunity to shape both our technology and our culture as we scale.

Responsibilities

Contribute to the development and scaling of Voxel’s perception and computer vision systems, powering real-time understanding of industrial environments

Design and deploy distributed systems for video ingestion, processing, and inference across both edge devices and cloud infrastructure

Build and secure cloud APIs, access control systems, and backend services that support the video platform and data pipelines

Develop scalable and resilient services that enable low-latency event detection, real-time alerts, and historical video analytics

Collaborate with cross-functional teams—including ML engineers, product managers, and researchers—to bring computer vision models into production

Influence the team’s technical direction and uphold high standards in code quality, system design, and operational excellence

Requirements

Must be based in, or able to commute regularly to, the San Francisco Bay Area, California, USA for an on-site role

0–2 years of experience developing backend systems using REST APIs, containerized services, and microservices architecture

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical software engineering experience

Exposure to building and scaling distributed systems, with hands-on experience using at least one of Flink, Kafka, or Kinesis for real-time data processing

Practical experience using Kubernetes to deploy, monitor, and manage containerized workloads

Working knowledge of at least one major cloud platform such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud Platform (GCP)

Preferred Skills

Experience with infrastructure-as-code tools such as Terraform

Experience contributing to machine learning or computer vision pipelines, particularly around data ingestion or processing infrastructure

Experience designing and delivering production-ready backend or distributed systems in a collaborative team environment

Background in video analytics, computer vision, or safety-related industrial products

Why join Voxel?

Directly impact the safety and well-being of millions of essential workers by deploying AI in high-impact real-world environments

Help build a category-defining AI platform at an early stage, with significant ownership and influence on technical direction

Work alongside a world-class team of engineers, ML researchers, and entrepreneurs in a fast-paced, mission-driven environment

Benefits

Extensive health, dental, and vision insurance

Highly competitive paid parental leave and support system

Equity through an Employee Equity Incentive Plan

Generous paid time off and flexible work arrangements
