Why your role matters
As a Data Center Facility Engineer at Smartdc, you work as a facility engineer, focused on the physical infrastructure that keeps our data centers operational. You are close to the equipment, solving issues on the floor, keeping our power, cooling, fire safety and security systems in good shape, and helping us deliver reliable capacity to customers around the world. Your work makes the difference between âupâ and âdownâ time, and your eye for detail helps us run a safe, stable and efficient data center.
Key Responsibilities
1. Infrastructure Operations \& Maintenance
Ensure continuous operation of critical systems: power, cooling, fire safety and security.
Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on electrical and mechanical equipment (generators, UPS, breakers and electrical panels, Heat pumps, CRAC units, PDUs).
Monitor environmental conditions (temperature, humidity) to maintain optimal performance.
2. Capacity Planning \& Optimization
Assess power and cooling capacity for new deployments.
Plan for future growth and ensure infrastructure scalability.
Optimize energy efficiency and implement sustainability measures.
3. Compliance \& Safety
Adhere to industry standards (e.g., ASHRAE, Uptime Institute, ISO).
Ensure compliance with local regulations and health \& safety protocols.
Conduct risk assessments and implement mitigation strategies.
4. Monitoring \& Incident Response
Use DCIM tools (Data Center Infrastructure Management) for real-time monitoring.
Respond to alarms and incidents promptly to minimize downtime.
Perform root cause analysis and document corrective actions.
5. Vendor \& Contractor Management
Coordinate with service providers for maintenance and repairs.
Review contracts and SLAs to ensure performance standards.
Supervise on-site work to maintain security and compliance.
6. Documentation \& Reporting
Maintain accurate records of equipment, maintenance logs, and incidents.
Prepare reports on energy usage, capacity, and reliability metrics.
Update standard operating procedures (SOPs) regularly.
Keep the operational costs under control
7. Project Support
Assist in data center buildouts, upgrades, and migrations.
Collaborate with IT teams for hardware installations and cabling.
Ensure minimal disruption during infrastructure changes.
What success looks like in the first year
You know the place inside out, from the layout to how all core systems tie together in our Rotterdam data center.
You solve issues quickly and calmly, keeping the infrastructure steady and uptime high.
Youâve built strong working relationships with i3D teams, suppliers, and international colleagues.
You share practical ideas that help improve energy use, monitoring, and day-to-day maintenance.
Your documentation is clear and on point, making audits, upgrades and projects run a lot smoother.
About you
Experienced with (data center) power systems: You have 3+ years of hands-on work with UPS units, generators, battery banks, switchgear and the electrical systems that keep the facility powered and stable.
Experienced with cooling and mechanical systems: You know your way around CRAC units, heat pumps and chilled water systems, and you can diagnose and solve cooling issues when conditions shift.
Comfortable fixing issues on the floor: When a UPS alarm appears, a generator needs testing, a fire panel warns you or a PDU acts up, you go to the equipment and solve the issue directly.
Understanding how facilities support IT: You know how power, cooling and airflow influence the IT load and what changes in density or airflow mean for temperature, redundancy and stability.
Calm problem solver: You read alarms, trace issues, and restore systems without drama.
Strong team contributor: You work easily with other engineers, vendors and project teams and keep communication simple and clear.
Language: Fluent in Dutch and English (spoken and written)
On-Call: Youâre comfortable with a rotating on-call schedule, where youâll be on call for one week every 5 weeks, with extra pay for your time. On-call responsibilities begin after 6 months.
