FIELD ENGINEER (FTE)

INVEST OTTAWA –AREA X.O

Reporting to the Business Development Director, Smart Farm \& Advanced Robotics at Area X.O, the Field Support Engineer, Cross Verticals will play a key role in supporting testing, project delivery, and prototyping activities across multiple domains, including defence, agriculture, and advanced robotics. This hands-on and versatile role supports multiple projects based on operational needs, working under the direction of Directors and Senior Engineers to deliver on field setup, integration, test execution, data capture, troubleshooting, documentation, and project close-out. Operating in an agile environment, the Field Support Engineer will contribute to process development, field data collection and analysis, and technology integration—helping ensure the successful progress and execution of innovative projects within the Innovation Farm and Defence verticals at Area X.O.

This position will be required to work onsite at Area X.O, minimum 3-5 days per week, and as required for tours, demonstrations, testing, events, and training sessions. A personal vehicle is required for commuting, as there is no access to public transit.

Corporate Pay Band D: $72,000 - $99,000

Hiring Salary Range: $80,000 - $85,000

Reason for opening: A brand-new position due to new funding agreements

WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING:

Agile Development Support: Contribute to the deployment and continuous improvement of processes, tools, and data management systems within an agile development environment.

Field Data Collection \& Analysis: Operate, deploy, and maintain advanced field equipment (e.g., agricultural technologies, land and aerial robotic systems, sensors) to collect, validate, and analyze live operational data.

Testing \& Validation: Support the execution of trials and long-term projects across robotics, agriculture, and defence technologies, ensuring performance validation, safety, and troubleshooting in collaboration with engineering and research teams.

Systems Integration: Assist in the deployment, configuration, and support of advanced robotics platforms, precision agriculture tools, and defence-related technologies.

Documentation \& Reporting: Maintain accurate logs, reports, and technical documentation detailing field results, workflows, and system performance to support data-driven decision-making and continuous improvement.

Collaboration \& Support: Work closely with R\&D, operations, and cross-functional teams to ensure seamless technology integration and effective knowledge sharing across multiple verticals.

Other Duties: Perform additional tasks as assigned by the manager, aligned with strategic priorities and client needs.

Periodic travel to Killaloe for testing/training and sit support (as scheduled)

WHAT YOU HAVE ACCOMPLISHED/GAINED THROUGHOUT YOUR CAREER:

Bachelor’s degree or diploma in Engineering (Mechanical or Mechatronics), or a related field (or equivalent 2-3 years of work experience).

Experience with data collection, analysis, and troubleshooting in field environments.

Experience or familiarity with uncrewed aerial systems (UAS), counter-UAS, ground robotics, sensors, IoT devices, or similar technical equipment.

Knowledge of agriculture technology, robotics, or uncrewed systems related to defence is highly desirable.

Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to adapt to rapidly changing field conditions.

Excellent communication skills and ability to work effectively in cross-functional teams.

Experience writing concise and professional technical reports and outgoing documentation.

Comfortable working outdoors and in diverse field conditions, sometimes requiring travel.

Understanding of basic agricultural operations or willingness to learn.

Hands-on experience with development and deployment of robotics (ground or aerial).

Basic literacy in at least one programming language (Python, etc.) (Preferred)

Ability to perform productive, self-guided work.

Experience managing long-term, multi-stakeholder projects with clear outcomes.

Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously in an agile, fast-paced environment.

Ability to function in a client-facing environment.
