The United Nations University (UNU) Hub on Humanitarian Innovation and Technology (HIT) is established in partnership with UNU and is housed in Lingnan University. This first UNU Hub in Asia is established to spearhead research and design initiatives, education and training programmes, and international collaborations for improving living conditions in developing countries and regions of the Global South. The UNU Hub also aims to harness Asia’s innovation capacity, deepens South-South collaborations and foster synergy with UNU institutes worldwide.
UNU Hub at Lingnan is looking for a research engineer with strong interest in applying AI, data analytics, and IoT to develop impact-oriented humanitarian technologies for the betterment of human conditions and advancement of SDG goals. Successful candidate, based in Lingnan University, will work closely with coordinators from UNU institutes and an award-winning team of designers and engineers to develop ideas into impactful products. The UNU Hub works on a wide range of research and products, including transparent filtration masks, intelligent wheelchairs, low-cost baby incubator and energy efficient air-purifier.
Successful candidate is expected to conduct research and design on humanitarian technology with a focus on AI and data analytic applications. He/she will also deliver lectures for the MSc on Global Humanitarian Innovation and Technology.
Responsibilities:
Assist the Director and UNU Coordinators to develop grant proposals and research plans
Conduct original research and collaborate with design team to publish new findings
Construct and deliver lectures and fieldwork at the graduate level
Assist the Director to develop joint international PG programmes
Design and deliver capacity-building workshops in Asia and the Global South
Derive innovative strategies to engage students, local communities, and stakeholders to garner support for the UNU Hub and its work
Design innovative mechatronics products, humanitarian technologies, and interactive applications for making real impacts
Requirements:
Genuine interest in humanitarian technology and the application of AI
A recognized full-time PhD
At least 5 years of experience in research, design and teaching
Strong record of academic publications and grant applications
Excellent interpersonal, organizational, resources management, and communication skills
Strategic thinking and a creative mindset
An excellent command of written and verbal English
Extensive international experience (studying, working, living)
Prior experience in managing postgraduate programmes will be an advantage
Candidates with less/more experience will also be considered for appointment at a relevant rank.
Successful candidate will be working in a team with diverse expertise from science to engineering, and social science to marketing. Preference will be given to candidates with outstanding academic training and successful grant application experience.
Salary and Fringe Benefits
The rank and commencing salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Fringe benefits, where applicable, include annual leave, medical and dental benefits, mandatory provident fund and gratuity.
