Your Team

MAG's IT Software Development group creates and supports software that helps MAG and its member agencies carry out their mission. The team handles everything from planning and building new applications to maintaining and improving existing ones. Along with custom development, they support key systems like the ERP, GIS, database, and website CMS. The group also provides technical guidance for software projects developed by outside partners and other technological efforts across the organization.

The Position

The Software Developer is responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining high-quality software solutions that meet the organization's goals and objectives. As a technical leader, you will create technical specifications, troubleshoot end user issues and provide assistance, collaborate with cross-functional teams, and drive the adoption of best practices in software development.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Designs, codes, tests, and maintains custom software systems by collaborating with various stakeholders to develop high-quality software solutions that meet or exceed customer expectations.

  • Develops and maintains databases and software applications.

  • Performs project planning for software development requirements. Identifies technical approach and operational feasibility.

  • Facilities collaborative code development and peer review.

  • Serves as a trusted technical advisor to stakeholders, delivering timely, strategic guidance and support on complex technical issues.

  • Diagnose, troubleshoot, and resolve issues with both custom developed and supported applications.

  • Leads discussions with stakeholders to proactively shape and refine business needs and expectations and to define the specifications of features and enhancements to custom software, ensuring their feasibility and seamless integration with existing architecture.

  • Develops technical documentation to guide future software development projects

The Candidate

The ideal candidate brings a strong background in software design and development, with hands-on experience across the full development life cycle. They demonstrate excellent problem-solving and analytical skills, a commitment to writing clean and maintainable code, and a proactive approach to improving systems and processes. They are detail-oriented, highly organized, and comfortable working both independently and as part of a collaborative team, including mentoring junior software developers. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential, particularly in explaining technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Applying software development lifecycle models, including Agile, Scrum, and Waterfall methodologies effectively

  • Conducts comprehensive quality assurance and control assessments

  • Finding and fixing coding errors in IT systems, software, and programming

  • Installing, repairing, and maintaining software and peripherals

  • Providing a high level of customer service and stakeholder engagement

  • Utilizes programming languages, including C#, ASP.NET, JavaScript, T-SQL, and content management systems

  • Writing, modifying, and testing code and scripts

  • Strong knowledge of relational databases including normalization and optimization strategies

  • Deep understanding of language-specific libraries, frameworks, and best practices

  • Proficiency with Git and best practices for version control

  • Adaptable in performing a wide range of duties, frequently shifting tasks of varying nature and complexity

Experience and Education

Senior Software Developer

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Business, Computer Science, Information Technology, Public Administration, Statistics, or related field.

  • At least 3 years of related work experience, such as software development, requirements definition, business analysis, and quality assurance and control.

  • Any equivalent combination of training, education, and experience that provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities.

Software Developer

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Business, Computer Science, Information Technology, Public Administration, Statistics, or related field.

  • Any equivalent combination of training, education, and experience that provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities.
