The Edmonton Oilers Hockey Club, a premier NHL organization, is building a new Hockey Analytics \& Technology group to push the boundaries of data-driven decision making in hockey. The group will leverage all aspects of technology (including data, analytics, and software development) to enhance player evaluation, team strategy, and overall performance. This work will directly impact organizational decision-making and the long-term competitiveness of the team.
About the Role:
We're looking for a versatile Hockey Data Engineer to join us.
This hybrid role blends two key responsibilities:
Data Engineering: You will leverage cloud platforms like Azure and Databricks to perform common data engineering tasks such as data ingestion, transformation, and orchestration.
Hockey Data Analysis: Your focus will be on descriptive and diagnostic analytics, performing both ad hoc analysis \& automated reporting to provide actionable insights to all aspects of Hockey Operations.
You will also play a key role in our R\&D efforts, helping to wrangle, transform, and make sense of large-scale experimental datasets—including cutting-edge player tracking and event data—that will power the next generation of hockey analytics models.
In addition, you will participate in the creation \& operation of our internal tools \& applications by working with developers to ensure that the data is positioned correctly for front-end development.
Your Focus in this Role:
Data Engineering:
Design, develop, and maintain data pipelines within Azure Databricks using the Medallion Architecture (Bronze, Silver, Gold layers) to support scalable and efficient data ingestion, transformation, and analytics workflows.
Create workflows to automate data integration from various internal and external hockey-related sources, ensuring timely and accurate data delivery.
Implement ETL/ELT pipelines using Databricks, integrating data from a variety of sources (APIs, databases, Azure Data Lake) into the structured data layers to ensure high data quality and consistency across the organization.
Collaborate with data scientists, developers and analysts to build out feature stores for machine learning and predictive analytics, ensuring high-quality, timely data for model training and deployment.
Ensure data quality and integrity through robust monitoring, validation, and governance practices, while optimizing query performance.
Support R\&D initiatives by ingesting, transforming, and structuring large-scale experimental datasets—preparing the foundation for next-generation analytics and machine learning models.
Hockey Data Analysis:
Conduct descriptive and diagnostic analytics to explore and explain trends, patterns, and insights from our large corpus of hockey data.
Perform ad hoc analysis based on requests from management, coaches, and scouts to answer specific, timely questions.
Automate key reporting processes to streamline data delivery, ensuring fast access to insights for decision-making.
Develop visualizations and reports using tools such as PowerBI, Jupyter notebooks, or Plotly to clearly communicate findings and tell compelling stories around the data.
Web Application Support:
Collaborate with Developers to ensure data is properly integrated into our internal web application, supporting seamless functionality and user experience.
Troubleshoot any data-related issues that arise within the application.
Collaborate within a cross-functional team to optimize data pipelines and processes to ensure performant end products.
Qualifications:
Education: Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Engineering, Applied Mathematics, or a related field.
Experience: 3+ years of experience in data engineering or analytics, ideally in sports or sports-adjacent environments.
Technical Skills:
Expertise in Azure Data Factory and Databricks for data integration \& processing.
Proficiency in Python, SQL, and ETL tools for data transformation and orchestration.
Experience with Spark/PySpark for large-scale data processing within Databricks.
Familiarity with Delta Lake for reliable, performant data lakehouse operations.
Proficiency with Git for version control and collaborative development.
Understanding of data modeling principles, including dimensional modeling and data warehouse design patterns.
Experience integrating data from RESTful APIs and external data sources.
Comfortable using tools such as PowerBI, Jupyter notebooks, or Plotly to communicate and visualize ad hoc insights.
Strong focus on descriptive and diagnostic analytics rather than predictive or machine learning approaches. A working knowledge of basic statistics is preferred.
Hockey Knowledge: A working understanding of the game and its associated metrics is preferred.
Work Style: You bring an optimistic attitude to work every day. You're efficient and resourceful, always finding smarter ways to wrangle data and deliver insights faster. You thrive in a supportive, collaborative environment where experimentation is encouraged and iteration is the norm.
Why Join Us?
Be part of a dynamic and growing Hockey Analytics \& Technology team within a premier NHL organization.
Collaborate on projects that directly influence on-ice performance and team strategy.
Competitive salary and benefits package.
