Position Overview:
The Automation Engineer is responsible for the design, or contract for design, of the necessary equipment, instrumentation, and software for new or improved operations in manufacturing to improve production, quality, cost and equipment uptime.
Essential Job Functions:
Diagnose electromechanical problems and determine how to correct them, checking blueprints, repair manuals, schematics, parts catalogs, and consultation with suppliers and other knowledgeable outside personnel as necessary.
Operate such that all efforts reduce repetitive causes and Root Cause is determined and resolved to prevent a repeat of problems.
Establish and maintain a standard of documentation that allows quick retrieval of machine information and optimizes the repair process.
Ensure that all operations are conducted with complete compliance to all Federal, State and local codes, safety codes and environmental laws.
Create schematics of existing and new electro-mechanical systems
Create work instructions for new and existing processes
Function as a Facilities engineer as needed
Manage subcontractors in effort to complete necessary improvements
Demonstrate an overriding concern for the safe conduct of all mechanical and electrical repair operations, observing all PPE requirements for every job.
Troubleshoot and/or program PLCs for process automation
Troubleshoot and/or program variable frequency drives
Design electrical systems for hazardous locations
Primary Objectives:
· Improve production operations with the installation or improvement of machines that reduce cost, improve quality, and improve productivity and reliability.
· Design and implement projects such that they are achieved on time and under budget while accomplishing the identified goals for Polyguard.
· Operate in a manner that sets a “world class” performance for engineering, design, MRO operations, and legal compliance.
· Effectively communicate all planned work to the organization and establish the engineering and maintenance function as a benchmark for collaborative work and successful accomplishment within Polyguard.
· Create technical documentation, including user manuals, design specs, and repair logs.
· Write code and scripts to control robotic systems and automated processes.
· Research, design, and create automated machinery, PLC systems, and software solutions
· Program and support PLC, HMI, and SCADA systems to control production equipment and improve operational efficiency
Requirements:
· Must have a BS in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, or related degree
Other Skills/Abilities:
· Strong organizational skills, able to work well under pressure and manage several tasks simultaneously.
· Work independently to meet project deadlines
· Must be detail oriented
· Must be able to read and write English and understand instructions and technical information in English.
· Demonstrate the ability to read prints and perform layout using engineering math skills.
· Be able to lift 50 lbs.
· Ability to collaborate across teams and translate technical requirements.
· Basic knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook
· Knowledge of SolidWorks and AutoCAD, PLC programing, robotics, and scripting languages (e.g., Python, Perl, Ruby). Preferred
· Analysis through data collection and reporting using tools such as Microsoft Excel and Power BI.
· Travel 10%
· PLC programming preferred
