The Mission
We are Roots. We are the reason that hundreds of thousands of gardens across the UK are looking greener than they did five years ago. Think Patch own online plants? Check our review count...
We arenât a fragile start-up anymore. Weâre a profitable, 50-person team with a serious operation behind us. Weâve spent the last few years (and over 2,000 hours of development) building a beast of a website with external agencies \& freelancers.
Now, weâre ready for the next chapter. We want to bring the brainpower in-house. Weâre looking for our first dedicated Product Manager to take the keys, own the roadmap, and help us build the best online plant buying experience on the planet.
The Role
This isnât about moving tickets around a Trello board. This is about Strategy with a capital S.
Reporting directly to the CEO, youâll be the bridge between the mud (our nursery) and the code (our website). We have a great platform; your job is to make it sing. Youâll stop us from building "shiny things" and start building things that actually help our customers and our warehouse team.
What Youâll Be Doing
1. Making the Website Irresistible
The Numbers:
Youâll wake up thinking about how to turn visitors into obsessed plant parents. You own the big stats: Conversion rate, Average Order Value, and getting people to come back for "just one more plant."
The Experience:
Youâll run experiments and tweaks to smooth out the bumps in the road. If a customer gets confused at checkout, youâre the one who fixes it.
The Cool Stuff:
We want to launch new ways to shop (think interactive tools and engagement features). Youâll be the one figuring out how we replicate the magic of walking through a nursery, but on a screen.
2. Greasing the Wheels (The Back End)
Itâs Not Just Pretty Pictures:
A pretty website is useless if the warehouse canât ship the orders. Youâll be diving into our internal techâmaking sure our packers, pickers, and planters have the digital tools they need to work faster and smarter.
Connecting the Dots:
Youâll make sure Shopify talks fluently to our inventory systems and logistics partners. You are the guardian of our tech stack. With great power....
3. Captaining the Ship
Taking Ownership:
Weâre moving from "agency-led" to "product-led." Youâll define
how
we build things. No more ad-hoc panic coding; just a solid, sensible roadmap that you define.
Herding Cats:
Youâll manage our developers (internal or external) and translate "business speak" into "developer speak" (and vice versa) so that everyone knows what theyâre building and why.
Who You Are
You Speak Fluent Shopify:
This is non-negotiable. You know the platform inside out. You know when to use an App, when to build custom, and when to just leave it alone.
Youâve Scaled Up:
You arenât looking for a blank canvas. You know how to take a busy, living, breathing website and upgrade it while the engine is still running.
You Love the "Boring" Stuff:
You get just as excited about saving the warehouse team 20 seconds per order as you do about a new homepage banner. You know that good ops is good business.
You Follow the Data:
You donât guess. You look at the analytics, you look at the heatmaps, and you make decisions based on whatâs actually happening, not what we
think
is happening.
Why Youâll Love It Here
The Sweet Spot:
Weâre big enough to have resources and stability (50 staff!), but small enough that you can still turn the ship. You wonât be buried in bureaucracy.
Real Impact:
Youâll see the results of your work immediatelyâwhether itâs a sales spike on the site or a high-five from the warehouse manager because you fixed a bug that was driving them crazy.
The Product:
Letâs be honest, selling plants is better than selling software subscriptions. We sell joy in a box.
