Job Description

The School of Continuing Education, one of the seven Faculties/Schools of the University and a major provider of continuing and professional education in Hong Kong, offers a wide range of full-time and part-time programmes at the post-secondary, undergraduate and postgraduate levels for young learners and working adults. It also offers in-house training and short courses to meet the community needs and market demands. Operated on a self-financed basis, the School and its College of International Education currently employ about 400 full-time staff and 500 part-time instructors. The School is inviting applications for the following position:

Assistant Information Technology Officer (Development) (Ref. No.: 25260216)

Responsibilities:

Write, test and maintain clean, well‑documented code for web applications and backend services.

Implement new features and enhancements from functional specifications or user stories.

Fix bugs and performance issues reported by QA, users or monitoring tools.

Develop and consume RESTful APIs and integrate with existing systems.

Produce and maintain unit tests and assist with basic test automation.

Collaborate with senior developers on design discussions and follow coding standards and version‑control workflows (e.g., Git).

Support deployments and basic troubleshooting in development/staging environments; escalate complex issues.

Perform other programming and IT tasks as assigned.

Requirements:

(i) Holder of Associate Degree / Higher Diploma in Computer Science, Information Technology or a related discipline with at least one year of work experience; OR (ii) Possession of HKCEE 5 passes including English Language (at least Grade C if Syllabus A/Level 2 from 2007) and Chinese Language (at least Level 2 from 2007), or at least 5 subjects attaining Level 2 in HKDSE including English Language and Chinese Language with more work experience

1–2 years of hands‑on programming experience (internships or industrial attachments may be considered).

Practical experience with at least one server‑side language such as Java, PHP or Python, and with SQL databases.

Experience building or calling RESTful APIs.

Familiarity with front‑end basics for responsive web apps: HTML, CSS and JavaScript.

Basic understanding of software development lifecycle, unit testing and debugging techniques.

Clear verbal and written communication; able to explain technical issues to teammates and document work.

Willingness to learn new technologies and follow established development processes.

Shortlisted candidates will be invited to attend a written assessment.

The initial appointment will be offered on a fixed-term contract of a period up to the time of the School’s possible migration, which should be around August 2027. Re-appointment thereafter is subject to mutual agreement and availability of funding.

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
