Product Owner/Principal Product Owner \| Customer Data Tools Project

We would like to invite expressions of interest for a 12-month secondment opportunity as either Product Owner or Lead Product Owner for the Customer Data Tools Project (CDTP), leading the migration of Infoshare to Aotearoa Data Explorer (ADE). This is a unique opportunity to lead a high-impact digital transformation project that will shape the future of how New Zealanders access and interact with official statistics.

The Principal Product Owner/Product Owner will be a member of CDTP, migrating data from Infoshare to Aotearoa Data Explorer (ADE). The Principal Product Owner/Product Owner will report to the CDTP Business Owner (Unit Manager - Customer Services and Support Team 2) and will work closely with the CDTP project manager and change manager. They will be responsible for making decisions that navigate complex impacts on customers and the business. This role has significant influence over the direction of the project and the work of the project team.

Depending on your experience and skillset, you will join CDTP as either:

Product Owner

Represent the voice of the customer and act as the key decision-maker on behalf of the business.

Manage and prioritise the product backlog to maximise value.

Champion the project vision and ensure delivery aligns with user needs and Stats NZ’s strategic goals.

Build strong relationships across business units and manage interdependencies.

Communicate clearly and effectively with stakeholders.

Support continuous improvement and service delivery excellence.

Principal Product Owner

Includes all Product Owner responsibilities plus:

Provide strategic leadership and guidance across the product lifecycle.

Influence and shape the direction of the project and future product strategy.

Lead prioritisation of investment decisions and manage strategic backlog ownership.

Mentor and uplift capability of other product professionals.

Champion product thinking across Stats NZ and enhance product management standards.

Navigate complex stakeholder environments and resolve conflicts at a senior level.

Product Owner

A good understanding of Stats NZ’s data and processes

At least 3 years’ experience in project environments.

Strong customer focus and ability to translate needs into product features.

Excellent communication and relationship management skills.

Understanding of data platforms and UX design.

Principal Product Owner

A strong understanding of Stats NZ’s data and processes

At least 8 years’ experience in complex, multi-team agile environments.

Proven success shaping and delivering high-impact digital products or projects.

Strong commercial judgement and strategic leadership capability.

Ability to influence at executive level and manage complex stakeholder environments.

Desirable for both roles

Experience using agile project management techniques

Knowledge of statistical data and metadata and an understanding of the customer use.

Good knowledge of the data tools Infoshare and/or ADE
