Remote (During Lockdown) \| In-House Creative Team \| 16 Hours per Week \| £20 per Hour

Sunny Art Centre is seeking a highly skilled Part-Time Freelance Front-End Developer to join our in-house creative team as soon as possible (working remotely during lockdown). This role is ideal for an experienced developer with a strong eye for UI/UX design, performance optimisation, and interactive user experience.

We require a minimum of 5 years’ professional experience as a Web Developer, UI Developer, JavaScript Expert, or Front-End Engineer across commercial or open-source projects.

The Position

You will play a key role in translating user needs and business goals into seamless, interactive digital experiences. Working closely with our designer and back-end developer, you will bridge the gap between graphic design and technical implementation, helping define how the application both looks and functions.

You must be technically confident, design-aware, and a strong problem solver with excellent communication skills. You will also contribute to performance optimisation, accessibility, and usability best practices.

Key Responsibilities

You will work closely with the Project Manager, Designer, and Back-End Developer to create responsive, high-performance interfaces across all devices. Your role will include:

Translating UI/UX designs and wireframes into high-quality front-end code

Creating elegant, responsive, and interactive user interfaces

Gaining continuous feedback from users, customers, and team members

Monitoring website performance and usability issues (e.g. via Smartlook)

Writing functional requirement documents and technical guides

Creating high-quality mockups and prototypes

Developing reusable, well-documented code and libraries

Optimising applications for:

  • Maximum speed

  • Maximum scalability

Designing new features and maintaining existing ones

Collaborating closely with back-end developers and designers to improve usability

Supporting troubleshooting, integration, and performance issues

Staying up to date with emerging front-end technologies

Essential Skills \& Qualifications

You must demonstrate strong experience in:

HTML5 \& CSS3

JavaScript or TypeScript

JavaScript frameworks such as jQuery, AJAX

SASS, LESS, Bootstrap, CSS Grid

Using complex REST APIs

Strong understanding of:

  • Cross-browser compatibility

  • Asynchronous request handling

  • Partial page updates \& AJAX

Client-side build \& configuration tools

Debugging using Chrome Developer Tools

Testing tools such as Webpack, Jasmine, Karma

Version control with Git, Mercurial, or SVN

Exposure to CI/CD pipelines (Jenkins, SonarQube, Docker)

Basic knowledge of Photoshop or GIMP for small image changes (preferred)

Desirable (Bonus Skills)

Knowledge of Ember.js and Ruby

Exposure to full-stack development

Strong understanding of SEO principles

Hourly Rate: £20 per hour
