Our client is a leading North American manufacturer of nutraceutical and consumer health products and part of a global organization specializing in oral and intra-oral delivery systems. The company provides end-to-end services including formulation development, manufacturing, and packaging.
Position Overview
The Manager, Research \& Development (Product Development) will lead a team of approximately 10 Product Development and R\&D professionals, overseeing formulation development and product commercialization.
This role is focused primarily on development, scale-up, and manufacturing readiness, rather than early-stage research. The successful candidate will bring deep expertise in solid dose formulation for dietary supplements and cannabinoid products, including oral and intra-oral delivery formats.
Working closely with manufacturing, quality, procurement, and commercial teams, the Manager will ensure successful product development from concept through commercialization.
Key Responsibilities
Lead and mentor a team of Product Development and R\&D specialists, providing technical leadership and guidance across formulation and development activities.
Prioritize projects, allocate resources, and support technical problem solving to ensure development timelines, commercialization objectives, and product launch milestones are achieved.
Oversee the development of solid dosage nutraceutical products, including tablets, powders, chewables, gums, and intra-oral delivery formats.
Guide formulation optimization, ingredient selection, and sensory performance to support product quality, manufacturability, and consumer experience.
Lead scale-up activities and technology transfer from laboratory development to pilot and full manufacturing.
Partner closely with production teams to ensure formulations are compatible with manufacturing processes and scalable for commercialization.
Manage multiple development programs simultaneously and coordinate cross-functional project activities across R\&D, manufacturing, procurement, and quality.
Work with suppliers and procurement teams to source and evaluate raw materials and ingredients.
Ensure accurate documentation of development activities, formulation records, and technical reports.
Support product development activities within cGMP manufacturing environments.
Monitor team performance, provide coaching and development, and foster a collaborative and high-performing technical environment.
Support planning and allocation of development resources to ensure efficient execution of R\&D and product development initiatives.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Food Science, Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Sciences, or a related scientific discipline; Master’s degree considered an asset.
8+ years of product development experience in dietary supplements, nutraceuticals, or cannabinoid products.
Extensive experience in solid dose formulation, including tablets, powders, chewables, gums, or lozenges.
Experience supporting scale-up and commercialization of new products.
Experience with oral or intra-oral delivery systems is highly desirable.
Proven experience leading direct reports and developing Product Development and R\&D team members.
Experience providing coaching, performance feedback, and professional development support within technical teams.
Strong knowledge of formulation science and ingredient functionality.
Experience working with tableting equipment, blending systems, and pilot processing equipment.
Solid understanding of cGMP manufacturing environments.
Experience working with ERP or formulation management systems is considered an asset.
Note: Authority to work in Canada is required.
