Roles \& Responsibilities:
Our client is seeking a Senior Application Developer Architect to play a leading role in the migration and modernisation of Java-based legacy applications.
This role will focus on defining and implementing strategies to transition applications from WebLogic to OpenShift, while helping modernise legacy systems and align them with the Department’s Target Architecture.
Working closely with product development teams, Enterprise Architecture, and platform support teams, the successful candidate will provide technical leadership, architectural guidance and hands-on expertise to support large-scale application transformation.
Key Responsibilities:
Lead the definition and implementation of migration strategies for legacy WebLogic applications to Kubernetes-deployable container images (e.g. Tomcat or WildFly/JBoss).
Support the modernisation of legacy Java applications, including framework upgrades and architecture improvements.
Collaborate with product teams and technical stakeholders to deliver migration and modernisation initiatives aligned with OpenShift.
Define and promote container-native design patterns, including microservices decomposition, messaging integration and resilience patterns.
Identify and address architectural challenges and technical debt that may impact migration.
Produce migration playbooks, technical documentation and architectural guidance to support teams across the Department.
Research and evaluate emerging technologies, develop proof-of-concepts, and present findings to stakeholders.
Key Requirements:
Strong experience designing and delivering well-engineered, secure software systems.
Experience working in Agile development environments (Scrum/Kanban).
Extensive experience developing Java enterprise applications, including legacy frameworks such as Struts, JSP and Spring, and modern frameworks such as Angular, Spring Boot or Quarkus.
Experience with Java persistence technologies (Hibernate, JPA, JDBC) and relational databases such as Oracle.
Strong understanding of containerisation and Kubernetes/OpenShift architecture.
Experience implementing RESTful APIs, messaging and integration patterns.
Knowledge of OAuth2 / OIDC identity integration in Java applications.
