Join us on the journey and help us achieve our strategic drives embedded in our Strategic Plan 2022-2028: Start well, finish brilliantly. One of the drivers “Thriving place to Study and Work” will enable us to continue to create places that our students and staff love to belong and feel immense pride.
About the role
In this Full Stack Developer (HEP Level 8) role, you’ll lead the end-to-end build of a modern web product—shaping the architecture, writing the code, shipping to production, and continuously improving performance and reliability. You’ll work across Django (backend) and Vue.js or React (frontend), hosted on Microsoft Azure, and you’ll be hands-on integrating Azure OpenAI and agentic AI workflows (prompting, RAG pipelines, multi-agent orchestration) to automate ESG and Scope‑3 tax reporting. You’ll also help ensure the solution is secure and compliant, with human-in-the-loop validation, privacy-by-design, and strong engineering practices like CI/CD, monitoring, and version control.
The role sits within ISILC and is currently based at VU City Tower (Melbourne CBD), working closely with academic, professional and research project staff.
This is a full-time fixed-term position at an HEP8, $113,953 - $128,326 plus 17% superannuation, classification working 36.75 hours per week over a fixed-term contract period (until 30/1/2027).
About the person
Strong professional experience as a full stack developer, ideally with deep capability in Python/Django plus modern JavaScript/TypeScript and a frontend framework (Vue/React).
Practical experience building production web apps: APIs, routing/state management, accessible UI/UX, and testing practices (unit/integration/e2e).
Comfort designing and running both relational and NoSQL databases (schema design, query optimisation, performance tuning).
Cloud exposure (ideally Azure) including CI/CD, monitoring, and version control toolchains (e.g., GitHub / Azure DevOps).
You’re someone who enjoys owning the whole product lifecycle—architecture delivery deployment* optimisation—without losing sight of secure, maintainable design.
You’re excited by AI-enabled product development in a real application: you can integrate Azure OpenAI, build RAG pipelines, and collaborate on agentic / multi-agent workflows that support ESG and Scope‑3 reporting.
You can operate well in an Agile environment, collaborating with product owners, designers, and QA while keeping delivery quality high.
Pragmatic problem-solver with good judgement: you know when to push through and when to escalate architectural/compliance/production risks.
Detail-oriented and process-conscious: you understand that small mistakes in ingestion/RAG/metadata can compromise reporting quality.
Collaborative communicator: you provide clear updates, document workflows, and coordinate effectively across a multidisciplinary team.
Security- and privacy-minded: you naturally build with compliance in mind (e.g., GDPR / Australian Privacy Principles).
A rare chance to build a modern Django + Vue/React platform and deliver real AI functionality (Azure OpenAI, RAG, multi-agent orchestration) into production.
Meaningful, applied work: automating ESG and Scope‑3 tax reporting with strong governance and auditability built in.
Working within ISILC at VU, alongside research and project teams, in a role that blends product delivery with high-impact sustainability-focused outcomes.
Duties
An example of duties you may perform will include:
Design, develop and maintain scalable web applications using Django (backend) and Vue.js or React (frontend).
Build secure authentication, role-based access control (RBAC), and RESTful APIs, integrating front-end and back-end services cleanly.
Design and manage SQL and NoSQL databases (e.g., PostgreSQL/MySQL and MongoDB/Azure Cosmos DB) to support application workflows and performance.
Integrate Azure OpenAI to automate ESG and Scope‑3 reporting processes, including production-grade use of embeddings and endpoints.
Build document ingestion and RAG pipelines using Azure Cognitive Search (chunking, embedding, retrieval), and implement human-in-the-loop validation to maintain auditable reporting quality.
Manage deployments on Azure, including CI/CD pipelines, monitoring, performance optimisation and troubleshooting, while working closely with designers, product owners and QA in Agile delivery.
