Implementation of innovative stochastic seismic inversion for seismic reservoir characterization of CO2 storage site.
CO2 capture, storage and utilization technologies are part of the range of solutions identified by the GIEC in its report dedicated to global warming mitigation measures. These technologies require precise 3D modelling, integrating seismic and well data of the geological layer where the CO2 will be injected.
The uncertainty associated with the result obtained is one of the key products of the modelling exercise in order to assess the risks associated with storage. Stochastic Bayesian modelling methods make it possible to integrate data from different sources, while quantifying uncertainty by generating multiple realizations.
The research topic at the crossroads of geophysics and mathematics will consist of implementing and testing an innovative geostatistical algorithm SPDE (stochastic partial differential equations) for stochastic seismic inversion.
The SPDE approach makes it possible to solve geostatistical problems on large volumes of data. A current research project studies its adaptation to the problem of seismic characterization of reservoirs and in particular the stochastic inversion of seismic data. In this context, integrated in the Viridien Reservoir Research department, the intern will participate in the theoretical development and implementation of a prototype.
This innovative methodology will be developed during the internship and must be implemented then tested, first on small volumes of synthetic data then on real data in order to validate its application, and to understand the impact of the different parameters as well as the limitations. The application of such approach to other domains will be further investigated to provide uncertainties estimation in the different workflows currently used by Viridien.
