We're looking for a Senior DevOps Engineer to join our Digital team in Newmarket. In this role, you'll be at the forefront of driving automation, streamlining application delivery, and fostering agile collaboration across the full development lifecycle.
You’ll work closely with developers, system operators, and stakeholders to deliver faster, more reliable solutions, enabling Watercare to deliver smarter and more sustainable services to Aucklanders.
Key Responsibilities
Lead complex automation and development across the full application lifecycle and toolchain
Collaborate with developers, system operators, and business stakeholders to manage efficient and effective code releases
Facilitate cross-functional workshops to maximise speed and automation
Drive iterative, business-led delivery while ensuring transparency and visibility of work
Influence modern development practices to unlock speed and value
Build strong, trusted relationships across the business, ensuring stakeholder needs are understood and met
Proactively communicate and reduce escalations or backlog
Encourage diverse, innovative thinking to solve delivery challenges
Promote cross-functional skill sharing and development
Champion best practices and continuous improvement across the development environment
Apply technical expertise to guide and support squad members
Foster a high-performance, engaged, and collaborative team culture
Coach and mentor team members across disciplines

Role
You’ll bring solid DevOps experience, a collaborative mindset, and a passion for automation and efficiency. To succeed in this role, you’ll have experience in:
Cloud infrastructure provisioning and management (Azure, AWS, or GCP)
Infrastructure as Code (ideally Terraform)
Containerisation using Docker and Kubernetes (enterprise-scale orchestration, deployment, configuration)
CI/CD pipeline creation and automation using tools like Azure DevOps, GitHub Actions, Jenkins, Cloud Build, Puppet, Chef, or Ansible
Scripting and automation using PowerShell, Bash, or Python
Supporting cross-functional teams across multiple stages of the software development lifecycle
Working in agile, collaborative environments
Holding relevant tertiary qualifications and/or recognised industry certifications
Strong problem-solving and debugging skills, with a continuous improvement mindset
A passion for sharing knowledge, mentoring, and driving best practices
Bonus If You Also Have
Experience in object-oriented programming languages (e.g. C#, Java, Python, TypeScript)
Familiarity with unit testing frameworks and writing testable code
A deep understanding of the software development lifecycle and modern architectural principles
