Data Engineering Lead (Lead Engineer/Solution Engineer) – Westpac Data Platforms

Sydney or Melbourne \| Hybrid working

In this exciting business critical role, you will play a senior, hands‑on leadership role within Westpac Data Platforms (DP) where you will be responsible for leading high‑performing data engineering teams and delivering production‑grade data solutions that support enterprise‑wide data initiatives.

No two days will be the same as you will combine strong technical depth with clear delivery ownership, working closely with product owners, service owners, and business stakeholders to translate complex requirements into scalable, reliable data products.

Importantly, you will also help shape how agentic AI is adopted to improve engineering productivity and quality across the data lifecycle.

Your day-to-day focus …

Lead and mentor cross‑functional data engineering and analytics teams across onshore and offshore locations.

Own end‑to‑end delivery of data streams, from discovery and design through build, testing, deployment, and operational support.

Drive high standards of technical quality, production readiness, and release discipline.

Partner with product owners and business stakeholders to define priorities, scope, and success measures.

Architect and oversee data pipelines using Python, SQL, Azure Synapse, and Informatica.

Ensure data quality, governance, lineage, and lifecycle management across platforms.

Champion the responsible use of agentic AI to automate design, development, and testing activities.

Communicate complex technical topics clearly to senior stakeholders, supporting informed decision‑making.

Key ingredients for success …

Extensive experience in data engineering and analytics within large, complex environments.

Proven leadership of senior engineers and distributed delivery teams.

Strong hands‑on expertise in Python, SQL, Informatica, Unix, and Control‑M.

Experience delivering data solutions on Azure platforms, including Azure Synapse.

Solid experience with Snowflake and Teradata in enterprise settings.

Strong understanding of data architecture, data modelling, and integration patterns.

Experience with agentic AI, autonomous agents, or intelligent automation tools.

Demonstrated ability to deliver production‑grade solutions with strong operational discipline.

Experience engaging senior business stakeholders and translating requirements into technical outcomes.

Clear communication skills and confidence operating in governance and release forums with experience supporting large‑scale data platform modernisation initiatives.

Exposure to data migration and integrated testing environments.

Experience working in regulated environments with strong data governance requirements, as well as Lean, Design Thinking, or scaled agile delivery frameworks are all highly desirable.
