An exciting opportunity is available for a Lead Engineer to join the Technology, Group Business Units. We are part of Operation Technology a forward-thinking technology team committed to delivering innovative software solutions that drive business success. Lead Software Engineer to play a pivotal role in designing, building, and delivering high-quality technology solutions. In this hands-on leadership position, you will bring deep expertise in Java development, API design and integration, database management, and version control using Git/Bitbucket, while guiding and mentoring a small to medium sized engineering team.

Key Responsibilities:

Team Management: Lead up to 10 Java API engineers and build a healthy and collaborative environment for the team.

Software Development: Design, develop, and maintain robust Java APIs and applications that meet business requirements and technical specifications.

Database Management: Develop and optimize database schemas, write efficient SQL queries, and ensure data integrity and performance.

API Integration: Design and implement RESTful APIs to facilitate seamless communication between systems and services.

Version Control: Utilize Git for source code management, ensuring efficient collaboration and version tracking.

Continuous Integration/Deployment: Good understanding/experience with DevOps and CICD pipeline creation by using tools like Bamboo, TeamCity, Octopus, Jenkins, GitHub Actions etc

Collaboration: Work closely with cross-functional teams, including product managers, designers, and other developers, to deliver high-quality software solutions.

Code Quality: Participate in PR reviews, contribute to best practices, and maintain high standards of code quality and documentation.

Problem Solving: Troubleshoot and resolve software defects, performance issues, and other technical challenges.

Skills \& Experience

Proven experience in managing and leading an engineering team

Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Software Engineering, or a related field.

Strong experience in Java Spring boot development within an enterprise environment.

Good proficiency in SQL and experience with relational databases (e.g., MySQL, PostgreSQL).

Experience designing and consuming RESTful APIs.

Good understanding of branching strategies to support collaboration and shared development

Experience with continuous integration and deployment tools, such as Bamboo.

Solid understanding of software development methodologies and best practices.

Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.

Excellent communication and teamwork abilities.

Good understanding of latest AI tools to fast-track development like Claude Code, Codex etc

Desirable Skills:

Experience with Agile development methodologies.

Familiarity with cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure).

Experience in working with Westpac’s Mesh layer will be an added advantage

Knowledge of front-end technologies (e.g., JavaScript, HTML, CSS, ReactJs, NodeJS).
