About Wolt

At Wolt, we create technology that brings joy, simplicity and earnings to the neighborhoods of the world. In 2014 we started with delivery of restaurant food. Now we’re building the delivery of (almost) everything and you’ll find us in over 500 cities in 30 countries around the world. In 2022 we joined forces with DoorDash and together we keep on dreaming big and expanding across the globe.

Working at Wolt isn’t always easy, but it’s definitely exciting. Here you’ll learn more, build more, and ship more than in most other companies. You’ll be challenged a lot, but also have a lot of fun on the way. So, if you’re a self-starter with drive and entrepreneurial spirit, this could be the ride of your life.

We’re hiring a Senior Backend Engineer to join our Merchant Data Hub team - a group on a mission to redefine how merchant data powers Wolt’s platform. We’re looking for someone who thrives in complex technical environments and enjoys the autonomy of building systems from the ground up.

The Merchant Data Hub team builds and owns the core systems responsible for indexing and serving merchant data across Wolt. Their work ensures that merchant information is reliable, consistent, and lightning-fast - forming a critical foundation for the entire delivery ecosystem. This distributed team of backend engineers and a team lead based across Helsinki and Berlin.

The team is currently rebuilding the foundations of Wolt’s merchant data flows to support future use cases across multiple markets. In addition to developing new systems, the team also leads site reliability efforts for the Wolt Merchant group - taking part in on-call rotations and working closely with SRE specialists to ensure smooth and reliable merchant operations across all markets.

This is a greenfield opportunity to design and build large-scale distributed systems that directly impact millions of users worldwide. As part of this team, you’ll have high ownership, visible impact, and the freedom to make key architectural and product decisions. You’ll collaborate closely with other engineers across Wolt to shape the future of merchant data at scale.

For this role, you can be based in Berlin or Helsinki, and enjoy our flexible hybrid setup - work from the office, home, or combine both, depending on your preference.

Our humble expectations

Several years of professional experience designing and scaling backend or distributed systems in production.

At least 2 years of hands-on experience with Go (Golang), plus the ability to mentor peers and promote engineering best practices.

Proven experience with high-traffic, low-latency, and high-performance applications.

Familiarity with technologies like Cassandra, Kafka, and gRPC - or similar modern data and messaging systems.

Solid understanding of distributed systems architecture, tuned for reliability, low latency, and high throughput.

Previous on-call experience and a pragmatic approach to reliability, incident response, and ownership.

Excellent communication skills - you can explain complex ideas clearly, make thoughtful trade-offs, and collaborate effectively across teams.

Why you’ll love working here

Build something from the ground up: help shape a brand-new, globally scaled system that underpins key business operations.

High, visible impact: your work will directly influence how merchant data powers the experiences of millions of customers, couriers, and merchants.

Real ownership: make meaningful technical decisions with end-to-end accountability.

International collaboration: join a truly global environment, with opportunities to travel for team offsites and work on cross-team initiatives across the globe.

Next Steps

We’ll fill this position as soon as we find the right person - so apply when you realize you really, really want to join us!

The compensation will be a combination of monthly pay and equity. The latter makes it exceptionally easy to be excited about our company growing and doing well, as you’ll own a piece of the pie.

Our Commitment to Diversity and Inclusion

We’re committed to growing and empowering a more inclusive community within our company, industry, and cities. That’s why we hire and cultivate diverse teams of people from all backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives. We believe that true innovation happens when everyone has room at the table and the tools, resources, and opportunity to excel.
