About the role
We’re on the lookout for a senior data leader to spearhead the design and construction of the core data platform that will drive our short-term trading desk. As our first dedicated data hire, you will join an experienced IT engineering team and take complete ownership of our data strategy and execution.
This is a role for a hands-on engineer with an architect's mindset. You will be responsible for building a scalable, cloud-native infrastructure from the ground up, creating the systems that provide timely, reliable data to our traders and quants. You'll have the greenfield opportunity to select the right tools and patterns, establish best practices, and build a platform designed for performance and scale within our cloud environment.
As the foundational member of our data function, you will have a clear path to grow into a leadership position, with the opportunity to build out a dedicated data team in the future.
Key responsibilities
Platform architecture \& development:
Architect and build a modern, scalable data platform from the ground up, leveraging best-in-class data lake and warehousing patterns.
Develop a robust and generic framework for ingesting data from a wide variety of APIs, ensuring high data quality and near real-time availability.
Implement data models optimized for diverse workloads: low-latency queries for traders and large-scale analytical processing for quants.
Hands-on engineering:
Build, deploy, and operate resilient, high-performance data pipelines in a cloud environment.
Solve complex data challenges, including the processing of specialized formats like weather data (GRIB files).
Collaborate closely with senior software engineers to ensure seamless integration between operational and analytical systems.
Stakeholder enablement:
Partner directly with traders and quants to understand their needs and deliver data solutions that give them a competitive edge.
Empower business users by feeding reliable data into key analytical tools for real-time (Grafana) and ex-post (Quicksight) analysis.
Lay the foundation for future MLOps and real-time modeling capabilities.
Your profile
Experienced: 6+ years in data engineering with demonstrated experience designing and building scalable, cloud-native data platforms.
Cloud architecture expertise: extensive hands-on experience building solutions on a major cloud provider (e.g., AWS, GCP, Azure). You have a deep understanding of cloud data services, such as object storage, serverless functions, and columnar data warehouses.
Strong engineering fundamentals: excellent programming skills (Python preferred), a deep understanding of data processing frameworks (e.g., Spark), data modeling, and modern data architecture patterns.
Stakeholder-focused: you can effectively translate business needs from traders and quants into robust technical specifications.
Pragmatic \& autonomous: you are a self-starter who thrives in a role with high levels of ownership and can make sound technical decisions to balance speed and quality.
Leadership potential: you are interested in mentoring others and are motivated by the opportunity to grow into a team leadership role.
Bonus points for:
Deep expertise in the AWS data ecosystem.
Experience in energy trading, finance, or other real-time market environments.
Hands-on experience processing complex, non-standard data formats.
Familiarity with Infrastructure as Code.
Why should you join us?
Build the foundation: this is a rare opportunity to architect and build a business-critical data platform from the ground up.
A clear path to leadership: as the first data hire, you are in the prime position to build and lead our future data engineering team.
Direct business impact: your work will be at the very core of our trading strategy, directly influencing our success in the market.
Technical autonomy: you will have the freedom to make key architectural decisions in a modern, cloud-native environment.
Collaborate with experts: join a highly skilled team of senior engineers in an ambitious and fast-growing company.
