Cover Letter Anatomy
A winning cover letter has a clear goal, a focused argument, and credible evidence. Aim for 250–400 words, readable on mobile, and easy to skim.
Layout
- Header: Name, email, LinkedIn, portfolio.
- Greeting: Address the hiring manager by name if possible.
- Hook: 1–2 lines tying your background to their mission/product.
- Evidence: 1–2 short stories with metrics aligned to JD.
- Close: Tie to their roadmap; ask for next step.
Formatting Rules
- Use short paragraphs (2–4 sentences each).
- Prefer plain text over heavy formatting (great for ATS and email).
- Export to PDF when uploading; keep a text version for emails.
Micro-Templates
Hook: “I’m excited about {{Company}}’s work on {{initiative}} because {{specific reason}}.”
Evidence: “I led {{project}} that improved {{KPI}} by {{%}} using {{tech/approach}}.”
Close: “I’d love to help {{Company}} achieve {{goal}} on the {{team}}.”
Quick Checklist
- Specific to the company (1 reference to product/user/roadmap).
- Two measurable outcomes, not responsibilities.
- Clean file name:
